Making an appointment

To make an appointment you may contact me directly. You do not need to be referred by a psychiatrist or your GP. However, if you are claiming through your private health insurance company it may be necessary for a referral. You are encouraged to verify this before making an appointment.

I am currently fully booked but if you would like to register your interest for when new appointments become available, please do so below.

Initial consultation

Typically consultations, whether intitial assessments or follow-up appointments, last for fifty minutes.

The first appointment is an opportunity for you to tell me about what brings you to therapy and what your hopes and expectations are. At the end of the appointment I will share my initial understanding of your problem with you, and explain the therapeutic approach I believe to be an appropriate way forward. There will also be an opportunity for you to ask any questions or express any concerns you may have.

Attending an initial consultation does not commit you to ongoing therapy. Many people are unsure about starting therapy, and an initial appointment can help with making that decision. It will be your choice whether to book another appointment, or take some time to consider whether I am the right therapist for you.

follow-up appointments

The focus of follow-up appointments will always be jointly defined. Broadly speaking, the first few sessions tend to focus on 'unpacking' your difficulties - developing a shared understanding of what you bring to therapy and how the situation has evolved. Beyond that we might move into a more proactive phase of therapy, for example problem solving, developing coping strategies, or testing out new beliefs or behaviours.

The frequency of follow-up appointments will also be jointly agreed. My recommendation is usually for weekly appointments in the first instance, reducing to fortnightly appointments when you feel ready for more space between meetings.
